In this post, I want to talk about Relationship Marketing, how it’s nice to help everyone, but the effects of trying to force someone into being helped and not letting them come to it on their own.
Now we have all heard about, “You can bring a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink it” or “You can bring someone to a ladder, but you can’t make them climb it”.
This sayings apply to anything, but for an example, lets talk about Network Marketing (since this seems to happen a lot in this industry).
Now in Network Marketing your friend/family/prospect is the horse, and you/your opportunity is the water.
Many people bring a few horses to the water, but when they don’t want to drink, they get very fed up with the horse. What it the horse isn’t thirsty?
What if your “water” isn’t appealing and is murky. What people don’t realize is that it isn’t the horses fault it doesn’t want to drink, the water isn’t attractive enough for them to want any.
In Network Marketing, people tend to blame the horse over the water, not thinking that maybe they aren’t presenting THEMSELVES from an appealing stand point. Maybe the horse wants a certain type of water, and even though your pond may have it, if it isn’t presented to them in a way that they realize its there, they most likely aren’t going to drink it.
You see Network Marketing is about the numbers, you can bring 100 horses to the water, and you may only get 5 to 10 to drink. People get so worked up that all the horses aren’t drinking that they get upset with the horse, frustrated with it, not realizing that you can’t save every horse.
They don’t realize that “Hey, you may have only got 10 horses to come, but one drank!! You saved one horses life!” Isn’t one life better than none?
Yes, ideally it would be great if they all drank, but they just won’t.
So how do you get more horses to drink?
Don’t get upset with the horses!! You need to make your water so clear, so pristine, so attractive and clean that THEY chose to drink. You just can’t force a horse to drink, it doesn’t work that way.
The same goes with people, if they aren’t interested in what you are doing, wither that be your own business, Network Marketing opportunity, or just flat out selling yourself, than its your responsibility to get better, to become more appealing so when you bring 10 horses, 2, 3, 4, etc drink, not just 1.
IT’S NEVER THE HORSES FAULT, Everyone wants more freedom, more experiences, more money, more water, but if they aren’t feeling your pond, it doesn’t mean they don’t like water, it just means THEY DON’T LIKE YOUR WATER.
So how do you get cleaner water?
Personal Development, Excitement, but mainly, COMPASSION. No one cares what you know until they know that you care. If they truly know you care, they will listen.
This was one of my downfalls when I first got into the industry years ago.
I got upset that my horses wouldn’t drink, just because I knew the water was clean, I didn’t show them how clean it was properly, I just expected to them to drink.
Help the horses you can, don’t get upset with them when they don’t drink, just know you didn’t clean up your water enough.
This is applicable in almost every situation.
People get soo upset when people don’t see things their way, not realizing that maybe they didn’t communicate it in the language the other speaks.
I hope you got value from this, I hope you this helped to give you a deeper understanding on why some people just wont drink your water.
Have a great day!
